Putting the Puzzle Together

On fridays I stay at home with my youngest son who is 2 years old.   He’s pretty activity.  On this day he migrated from reading books to making me food in the play kitchen to assembling a puzzle.  In fact, he worked on that puzzle for a while.  At first, I didn’t want to intervene because I could see the wheels turning in his head.  But, if I’m honest, I was also learning some Read More …

Fish Sitting (Day 7)

Today was kind of a slow day here at home.  The two older children have had a temperature all day, so it has been a very mellow day.  I think Pigwidgeon was getting bored.  For most of the morning he rode the children’s rocking horse.  He was getting so into it, we had to re-fill his water twice.  It was as if he thought he was actually going to go somewhere.  I swore I heard Read More …

Fish Sitting (Day 6)

When I got home from church today, Jess was really excited.  She had successfully changed Pigwidgeon’s water without killing him.  This is quite a feat, be assured, because she has a 90% kill rate when cleaning fish tanks.  I am glad she did it too–he was starting to get a bit smelly and his bowl was starting to fill up with gunk.  I mean it was getting really nasty.  It kind of reminded me of Read More …

Fish Sitting (Day 3-5)

Fish sitting has been fun!  Boy, does this little guy like to help in the kitchen.  We did a lot of baking on Thursday.  We made cookies, bread, and tortillas, and he especially loved helping with the dishes.  He was so into making sure everything was clean, he even tried to jump into the water in the sink.  We eventually put a bag over the top of the bowl so he couldn’t get out.  I Read More …

Fish Sitting (Day 2)

Well, Last Night Eve (our cat) would not let Pigwidgeon sleep in peace.  Eve kept trying to leap up to Pigwidgeon’s bed to play, and we finally had enough. So, the only spot that we could put him was the pantry.  He seemed to wake up refreshed and in a good mood. Pigwidgeon was really interest in doing what the kids wanted to do.  He played checkers, Battleship, and a new Wii Game called Just Read More …

Fish Sitting (Day 1)

My brother asked me if I would watch his family fish “Pigwidgeon” while they traveled to San Diego for a week or so. I thought it would be no problem; how hard can it be to care for a fish? So after a brief set of instructions (that rivaled the manual for the space station), we put Pigwidgeon in the car and started off home. Little did I know he would be so quiet. I Read More …

Walking Away From Faith …And Toward Reason (2 of 3)

Brandon, yesterday we talked about your understanding of the central belief of Christianity—The Gospel—and your journey in the Christian faith.  Today let’s talk about how you began your journey away from faith and toward reason. When did you begin to become disillusioned with Christianity? The other enduring love of my life beside God has been learning about the natural world through the methods of science. I have always been thrilled by science and contemplating Read More …

Walking Away From Faith …And Toward Reason (1 of 3)

Today, I am starting a multi-part series with my friend Brandon Bravo–a self proclaimed Atheist. Christians, especially in the Evangelical world, are really good at telling and hearing stories of coming to faith.   (Lutheran Side Note: Lutherans are usually not as good telling these stories, it’s not in Lutheran culture to do so.  They are equally bad at hearing these stories because they’re listening to make sure the person understands justification correctly.) Christianity Read More …
